AUTHENTIC LIME TECHNOLOGY FOR THE MODERN WORLD

The proof of evidence is conclusive

Diverse commitments from a purist with passion

Harry is increasingly involved in consultancy and reports; condition surveys and the specialist training of others to repair buildings properly. Currently, he is personally carving new elements for a pair of extremely ornate 18th Century ashlars gatepost finials; and has supervised the restoration of the wrought iron gates. Another intricate project is the restoration of infill panels for a Grade-One listed Manor House, which had been badly and incorrectly executed with cement just ten years ago. Other specialist projects include an ongoing solution for Roedeans’ perennial moisture problem; and the quinquenial repairs to a village church.

There is no doubt that lime-based materials are the superior natural eco-friendly solution in the preservation of our heritage and classic new buildings; and to protect our global environment. It was only after the proof was irrefutable, that Harry decided to establish Lime Works – specifically to provide a unique single-source professional service that combines consultancy, materials manufacturing, project management and on-site application contracting services.

Specialist advisor for emerging countries

For several years, Harry has worked in Romania with an English NGO, to help with training local people to repair their houses properly. This work involves extensive knowledge of old buildings and the complete range of techniques needed for their repair. Without the luxury of modern Western European techniques or equipment, the reliance was entirely on traditional methodology and rediscovering how things were done.

Harry has advised and managed highly decorative render schemes to facades, as well as complete structural repairs. Additional diverse activities have included: repair processes, staff training, site management, specialist solutions for massive structural problems, fine lime plaster repair, exterior renders and lime wash, roof tiling, damp and general decay.

Harry has collaborated with the senior Historic Building Architect for the region, who works for the Romanian Government on the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Southern Transylvania.

The Lime Works organisation now authoritatively answers the need for a parallel between the local vernacular ability and tomorrow’s sustainable requirements. The company can demonstrate and evidence how one material alone will beneficially alter the properties of any past, present and future building. The inherent values of lime and the understanding that natural materials have worked for centuries should never be forgotten. Our ancestors fully understood that building correctly is not just about materials alone, it is the blend of technology and creative, intelligent craftspeople, which continue to make natural lime work!

Harry is committed to the development of an organisation for the training of future generations; Harry said, “We are beholden to impart our knowledge and gained experience for the benefit of the future. Lime Works has continuously employed ‘starters’ when new staff has been required and we train them in-house and on-site”. He is also helping to write a foundation degree, which was agreed in 2010 to be a nationally available PPD degree course in the simple task of how to study a building, not a book!
